LESSON PLANS - LEGENDS

Guatemalan Worry Dolls

There is a very old legend among the indigenous people living in Guatemala which has been passed down for generations. Children tell their worries to a worry doll before going to bed at night. They then place the worry doll underneath their pillow. The legend says that when you wake up in the morning your worries will be gone. The worry doll took your worries away!

You will need:

  • Cloths pin with round heads
  • Yarn (You can use two colors of yarn per doll. One for shirt area and the other for pants or skirt area)
  • Wooden Popsicle stick for arms. What to do
  • Markers

What to do:

  1. Cut the popsicle stick in half
  2. Glue one piece to either side of the peg to form arms. Allow to dry
  3. Take a piece of yarn and starting from the indentation below the rounded head you start to wrap the yarn down the clothespin until you come to slightly above where the cloth pin separates into two.
  4. At that point change color yarn and decide if it will be a boy or girl doll.
    1. For girl dolls , start the new yarn at the place where you stopped the shirt color and continue halfway down the two sticks. Tuck in the ends where you can. Using a point from a paper clip helps tuck in the ends of the yarn.
    2. For boys dolls you need to spiral the yarn between the two sticks to make the pants.
  5. With markers, you can make eyes and a mouth and sandals for the feet.
  6. Be creative.
