| LESSON TIPS - RHYMES - COUNTING OUT RHYMES |
|
I have been using counting out rhymes frequently. They have been a great success all the way from Pre-K to 6th Grade.
You can use pretty much any verse (from a song), chant, poem or rhyme. I sometimes do one at the end of class, if I have a few minutes left and don't want to start anything new.
Have students stand in a circle with the teacher in the middle. Once students know the rhyme well, the teacher in the middle can be replaced by one of the students.
With the outstretched arm or another pointing device ( I use a little plastic bumble bee, which is attached to a long stick) start going around the circle in order, one student at a time, while saying the rhyme. One word, one student. Encourage the students to say/chant/sing the rhyme with you.
Whoever gets pointed at with a predetermined word (s) , needs to sit down and is out. After that they still are responsible to sing/ chant/ recite with the rest of the class. You start the rhyme over and over until only one student is standing, who then wins a small prize. |
