Simon Dice

Be prepared to have a list of vocabulary words you want to review handy and ready, since this game is more fun if you can play it faster. I sometimes put the list of vocab words on a poster in the back of my room.

  • Students all stand up
  • Teacher calls out : Simon dice: and then a vocabulary word
  • Students make the appropriate motion
  • Students who did not make the corresponding motion to the word sit down
  • Students who needed to look around and copy the motion from classmates sit down
  • When teacher calls out a vocabulary word without saying : Simon dice" before, students are NOT to make the gesture. If they still do the gesture, they sit down.
  • Winner of the game is the last student standing.

I always tell my students, that this game is played on the "Honor System", meaning no one points a finger at a classmate, saying that they did it wrong and should be out. I usually say : If you jumped, you are out, because I did not say "Simon dice" or everybody who turned around when I had said "jump" needs to sit down.
When they are only a few students left, I usually have them stand back to back ( or close their eyes) so the can't see each other when I call out the words.
