Gummitwist is a game that girls in Germany have been playing for a long time (At least 50 years !) I have heard this game called in America "Chinese Jumprope". All my students from Pre-K through sixth grade love to play (boys and girls!). We usually play it by popular demand during the last day of class in the school year.
You can purchase a Chinese Jumprope in Target, Walmart or other Toystore or you can make your own by buying an elastic band and tying it together with a knot on one end (It shoud be long enough that two people can stand inside it and be about 2-3 meters apart)
- I have two students stand inside the jumprope and stretch the band as far apart without hurting themselves.
- Both students have their legs apart, the rope is around their ankle. That is level one, round one. While a third student jumps with one foot inside and one foot outside. All the other students count (in the target langauge) until the student makes a mistake by jumping on the gummitwist, loose their balance or until 10 .
- If the student is able to do that without stepping on the Gummitwist or jumping too far where he/she would be with two feet outside the gummitwist (or two feet inside the gummitwist) ,then he/she advances to the next round.
- If the student is not able to finish the round, he/she releases one of the two children holding the gummitwist around their feet.
- Once everybody had a turn in the class, the first student gets a turn again and continues the level & round he previously did not complete. They do not start from round one again.
- The goal is to compelte all levels and rounds.
Level one, Round one: Inside/Out
Legs apart, the rope is around ankle. Students jump across the rope always having one foot inside and one foot outside
Level one, Round two: Two feet
Studnet jumps to ten, always with two feet on the rope. Forwards and backwards.
Level one, Round three: Top/buttom
Student starts out with one foot over and one foot under the rope. They jump forward and need to have one foot over and one foot under the rope when they land.
Level one, Round four: Inside/Out - Narrow
Same as round 1, except that the two students holing the gummitwist, close their feet.
Level one, Round five: Two feet- Narrow
Same as round 2, except that the two students holding the gummitwist, close their feet.
Level one, Round six: Over/ Under- Narrow
Same as round 3, except that the two students holding the gummitwist, close their feet.
Each level will have six rounds.
Level two, Round 1: Inside/outside
Same as level one, round one, except gummitwist is higher between the ankles and knee. Level two, Round 2: Two feet
Same as level one, round two, except gummitwist is higher between the ankles and knee.
Level two, Round 3: Under/over
Same as level one, round three, except gummitwist is higher between the ankles and knee.
and so on.... Level three: Gummitwist is around the knees.
Level four: Gummitwist is just underneath the buttom.
Level five: Gummitwist is on the waist.
Level six: Gummitwist is around the neck. |
